Streaming issues via RTMP

When streaming to Hopin via RTMP through a third party application (such as StreamYard or OBS), you may run into issues such as video blurriness or freezing. Here are some ways to work through issues you may experience.

Blurry, Freezing, Low-Quality Playback

The resolution of the stream can be compromised by the speed and strength of the internet connection of the computer streaming the video. To compensate for this, you will need to change the resolution of the stream. You will need to stop your streaming to make these changes.

You can use this article to learn how to stream with StreamYard, we do recommend it for a better experience and to avoid stream quality issues with Hopin.

If you are using a third-party application, you can use this article on how to stream with OBS to set your system up, the settings should work fine for most other apps; in this article, we will focus on OBS.

To change your resolution in OBS, go to the Settings menu. From there, you can choose the Video tab to open those settings.

Check your resolution settings as you want them to match. 

  • Make sure the Base and Output Resolution is the same
  • Double-check the Aspect Ratio set to 16:9
  • Check the Common FPS Values to be 30

Note: We recommend constant bitrate (CBR) rather than variable bitrate (VBR), generally around 5000 kbps if possible for best quality. If your system or internet connection can't cope, using a lower bitrate is recommended - around 3000 kbps or lower. A few tests will help find the "sweet spot" for your system.

Tip: On a low internet bandwidth, you can stream with 1280x720 (Output Resolution). Most attendees will not be able to tell the difference, and this will greatly improve the stream playback.

Switch RTMP provider

If the above changes haven’t fixed the quality of the stream, you will want to change the Hopin stream provider. 

When generating the RTMP stream settings in the Event Dashboard > Venue > Stage/s, two separate RTMPs URLs are created: Preferred and Fallback. We use Amazon IVS as the preferred provider and MUX as the fallback.

The preferred provider is what you will initially use in your streaming software. However, if the stream still isn't clear, you could try to use the fallback provider instead and see if things improve.

Note: You will need to stop the broadcast to make the change.

Reset the stream

If you are still having trouble with the stream quality after trying the above solutions, you could try to reset the stream.

You can reset the stage (by using the yellow reset button at the top right of the backstage) to get things going again.

Note: Please have in mind that while streaming via RTMP using the reset button will automatically generate a new set of RTMP keys for the stage. You will have to input the new key into your streaming software before the stream can continue. Also, using the reset button means the recording for the stage will be split into two parts: one stream before the reset and one for after.
